The Yoke

I want to start today's post off with some scripture that you should already be familiar with. Let's read it.

Matthew 11: 28-30 says this, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my Yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my Yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light." (NLT).

This is a passage of scripture that we have all known and heard many times, but do we truly know what it means?

Do you know what the meaning of Yoke is?

A Yoke is a Wooden Crosspiece fastened over the necks of two animals- horses, donkeys, mules, ox, etc.- and attached to a heavy cart or plow that the animals are to pull.

But read that again.

A Yoke is a Wooden Crosspiece.

Sound familiar?

Jesus said, "Come to me, and I will give you rest. Just take my Yoke upon you, it is light and easier for you to carry."

Meaning that he would take your Yoke, so that you would not have to bear it.

This Yoke is the Cross.

The Wooden Crosspiece that he took from our shoulders and placed on his own, and he carried it.

But he didn't have to. We have done nothing to deserve this act of love. But Jesus thought that we were worth it.
