The Coming King- Part 1

The Wonderful Counselor.

In Isaiah 9:6, we find the prophecy given to Isaiah about a coming King- the long awaited Messiah.

In most translations, the bible’s description of the king begins with two words- ‘Wonderful’ and ‘Counselor’, but it is common to think that the two words go together- like this one in the New International Version:

For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

This shows that the coming King (Jesus) would be wise and just, equipped with the knowledge and ability to give perfect advice and counsel- able to rule his people with wisdom, power, adn fairness.

These qualities are important in any king in the seat of power, but especially in the Saviour of the world!

The word Wonderful, can be translated to Marvelous, Astonishing, and Admirable- but the wonderfulness of Jesus can not be truly described or understood. We, as humans, can never fully comprehend the full wonder of Jesus, but we can read of some of His wonders in the Bible (I encourage you now to read one or all of the four Gospels, then note/journal about all the wonders of Jesus you find).

Counselor simply means “One who gives advice”, but Jesus is so much more than a man with good advice, He’s the Wonderful Counselor! His counsel is full of Grace and Truth (John 1:14), and worthy of our obedience.

Proverbs 15:22 states this about a counselor,

Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors

they are established.

Through Jesus, God’s purpose of Salvation was not disappointed; it was established.

And that is why we celebrate Christmas, because the coming King came, he died and rose, and He’s coming back again.
