"... The disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o'clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, "It's a ghost!"

But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don't be afraid," He said, "Take courage. I am here."

Then Peter called to him, "Lord, if it is really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water."

"Yes, come," Jesus said.

So peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he shouted.

Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. "You have so little faith," Jesus said, "why did you doubt me?"

-Matthew 14: 24-31 (NLT)

We are all familiar with this wonderful story.

But it is more than just a great story with terrific characters- it is a beautiful illustration of God's grace and protection to those who are his.

Like Peter, Winds rage and waves grow boisterous, attempting to frighten and distract us. And like Peter, we may doubt and begin to sink.

But Jesus bids us to "Come."

And when we start to sink and cry out for help, Jesus will come to our aid and rescue us- right on time.

Jesus could have prevented the storm- he could have stopped the thrashing waves and stilled the billowing wind.

But He had other plans.

Sometimes Jesus needs to remind us how weak we are without him, and how much our faith is lacking.

And He reminded Peter of this, with a test.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure how I would have handled Peter's test.

Would I have been faithful enough to step out of my comfortable seat on the boat, and onto the angry waves?

I hope so- but I don't think so.

Jesus wants us to take risks of faith on him.

He wants us to step out of our comfort zone.

He bids us to come.

Will you listen?
